Oklahoma City Thunder Launch Championship Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Win
The Thunder star came to the Thunder back in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the winning baskets deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions opened their championship campaign with a 125-124 win over the visiting Rockets.
Last season's MVP poured in a team-high 35 points, including two from the free-throw line with just mere seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the titleholders a winning beginning.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with 39 points and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, played a major role together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Determination and defense," Gilgeous-Alexander commented of their performance. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, fortune or misfortune. We did enough defence to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."
Before the tip-off, the team's championship banner was raised at their arena, while the players were presented with their title rings.
The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the franchise relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the opportunity to secure some payback on this Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the same day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from the Slovenian star was insufficient to prevent his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Golden State Warriors.
Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 for the road team.
Los Angeles were without the league's top scorer LeBron James as he recovers from sciatica.
