The Pakistani team Stops the Proteas' 10-Test Victory Run.
The left-arm pacer secured a quartet of wickets in the final innings following going wicketless in the first innings.
First Test, Lahore (day four)
The home side 378 (Imam-ul-Haq 93, Salman Agha 93; Muthusamy 6-117) & 167 (Babar Azam 42; the spinner 5-57)
The visitors 269 (De Zorzi 104; Noman 6-112) & 183 (Dewald Brevis 54; Shaheen Afridi 4-33, Noman Ali 4-79)
Pakistan won by 93 runs
The national team halted world champions the Proteas' winning streak by sealing a 93-run margin victory in an exciting and competitive first Test in the city of Lahore.
South Africa, whose 10-Test unbeaten run in Test cricket ended with victory over the Aussies in the WTC final in June, were dismissed for 183 chasing 277.
Having resumed on 51-2, they saw the dismissal of century-maker De Zorzi lbw to left-arm quick Afridi to the third delivery of the day to push the tightly balanced run chase in Pakistan's favor.
Left-arm spinner Noman, who took 10-191 in the match, dismissed Tristan Stubbs for 2 and clean bowled Brevis, who offered some resistance with a run-a-ball 54.
Off-spinner Sajid also took advantage of sharp turn to terminate opening batsman Ryan Rickelton's innings - he lasted 145 balls for 45 runs - and Afridi returned in the afternoon session to dismiss the lower order with a fine display of reverse-swing bowling.
He had Verreynne leg before for 19 and dismissed Prenelan Subrayen and Kagiso Rabada to secure the win.
It was each team's first match of the 2025-2027 Test championship cycle and moves Pakistan straight into second place behind leaders the Australian team.
The win was founded on contributions of 93 by opener Imam-ul-Haq and, crucially, number seven Salman Agha which lifted them to 378.
From there slow bowlers Noman Ali and Sajid Khan took advantage of helpful home pitches, as they did in their Test series win over England last year, to sustain their lead.
The second and final Test begins on October 20.
